Bulgaria — is it on your travel list? It’s on mine, especially its capital, Sofia, a city rich in Roman ruins and Byzantine architecture.

If you’re a history lover who enjoys affordable travel and getting off the beaten path, then Bulgaria might be the place for you, for a few months anyway. In a two-part episode of the Postcard Academy, my guest Stephanie Craig shared how she ended up in Sofia and why it’s better suited toward digital nomads surfing the Schengen Zone than expats.

Stephanie is a travel writer and an American expat/nomad based in Sofia, and co-host of the Rick Steves Over Brunch podcast (She’s also known as The History Fangirl).

In part 1, Stephanie gives us a whistle stop tour of Bulgarian history, which is filled with one occupation after another. We also talk about must-see historical sites in Sofia, including:

    • St. George Rotunda

    • Boyana Church

    • Park Vrana

    • Central Mineral Baths

In part 2, you’ll get a deep dive travel guide on everything you need to eat, drink, and do when traveling to Sofia, as well as day trips you can take.

You’ll discover:

  • The best view in Sofia;

  • Where to hang out at night;

  • The best walking tour to go on;

  • The best cafe to get work done;

  • The beaches you should visit;

  • And more.

You’ll also get a real flavor of what it’s like to live in Bulgaria as an expat, and learn:

  • What it’s like to give birth in a country that’s not your own;

  • How the pandemic is affecting Stephanie and her expat family;

  • What Bulgarian bureaucracy is like;

  • And a culture tip that you need to know to avoid awkward (and potentially dangerous) situations with the locals.

P.S. After four years in Bulgaria, Stephanie plans on heading to Oklahoma with her fiancé, whom she met in Sofia (though he’s from Zimbabwe —global citizens of the world, unite!)
