The most interesting thing to do in Trieste is dolce far niente in Piazza dell'Unità, the heart of this city overlooking the sea. Once the most important port town of the Hapsburg Empire, and now part of Italy, for a time Trieste was a free territory. There are still signs in windows - and a small movement - calling for independence. I really wanted to do a walking tour, but there weren’t any, so we rented audioguides from the tourist office that looped us around the main sites, including the statue of James Joyce, who spent 10 years here.
